Pro Surfing Ramblings
Kelly Slater surfed against Andy Irons in the final at the ASP Japan contest. It was close, but Andy pulled it off in the end. Somehow I get the feeling the judges were leaning to give Andy Irons more points per wave to keep the championship race close. I’m sure they want the 2005 ASP championship to go down to the wire in Hawaii. Thus, after watching the final on-line, I’m saying Andy Irons was given the win by the judges. Both surfers had comparable waves, but I thought Kelly Slater had the edge. However, I’m just a Monday Morning Quarterback and biased towards Slater. NKF Labor Day Surf Contest
NKF surf contest was held this past labor day at Coconuts in Cocoa Beach. This was the 2nd year I volunteered to judge the contest. The contest was blessed with a building wind swell and the surf was 2-4 feet and super drifty. Judging a contest in these conditions was difficult as the contestants had trouble staying within the boundaries. However, it was fun and a pretty good turn out considering the weather, Katrina news coverage, the start of football season, and gas prices! This contest is a fundraiser for the NKF and a grand social event for Cocoa Beach!
Hurricane Trifecta
Central Florida is getting lucky with Ophelia. Ophelia has been spinning off of Cape Hatteras this past week and we have seen pretty good surf. Its been big with offshore winds. A little challenging on the paddle out, but some fun and big peaks are up and down the Coast. Looking at the forecast for Ophelia and it looks as if it can only get better. Below are some photos snagged from the web. We currently have a trifecta of hurricanes in the Atlantic. Maria, Nate, and Ophelia make for impressive Satellite photos! These storms look to make it a September to Remember!
We Are Water Happenings
Not much went on with We Are Water this week. The surf has been up and most of my attention has been on that. But, with due time more articles will come about!
